Olfactometer
Human-Sensory Detection Coupled with Gas Chromatography
Overview
The JAS Olfactometer is a sniff detector designed for olfactory detection in gas chromatography, combining analytical precision with the unique capabilities of the human sense of smell.
It enables analysts to identify and record individual odors as compounds elute from the GC column — providing a powerful tool for flavor, fragrance, and aroma research.
Functionality
After chromatographic separation, the effluent is split and directed simultaneously to a detector (FID, TCD, or MSD) and to the JAS Olfactometer nose piece.
The operator can record olfactory events using a pusher/slider control, marking intensity and duration directly within Agilent OpenLAB CDS, ChemStation, or EZChrom software.
This synchronization allows the correlation of sensory responses with chromatographic peaks.
Applications
- Flavor and fragrance analysis in food and beverages
- Detection of off-odors in chemicals and plastics
- Aroma development in food design and quality control
Features
- Heatable, flexible transfer line adjustable for user comfort
- Ergonomic nose piece to prevent condensation
- No cold spots — ensures zero compound loss
- Optional EPC for flow condition adjustments
